Energy system sustainability represents a priority which involves key issues such as the security of energy supply, the improvement of air quality, and climate change mitigation. A multidisciplinary and structured integration of data and methodologies allows obtaining a comprehensive analytical knowledge framework that facilitates the development of innovative methods and tools for environmental monitoring and policy-making support as well as know–how transfer. The activities are focused on the detailed analysis of the energy-climate-environment relationships with reference to strategic EU and national objectives (e.g. COM2008/30, COM2005/0446/CE, NEC Directive 2001/81/CE), and are applied in different research fields:

  • development of integrated energy system models at different spatial scales and individuation of strategies to optimize the resource utilization;
  • scenario analysis and definition of policy guidelines for the energy–environmental planning and action plans;
  • integration of chemical –physical and biological techniques for the characterization of atmospheric pollution impacts on environment and human health; 
  • individuation of energy-environmental indexes/indicators to assess the anthropogenic activity impacts and energy system sustainability.
