The Institute for Environmental Analysis is the first CNR institute to play the role of Lead Contractor to implement a Service in the framework of Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

On 1st March 2017 the contract “C3S_311a_Lot3: Baseline And Reference Observations Network Service Contract 1” was signed by IMAA and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, after the successful evaluation of the proposal submitted by IMAA in response to the ITT  C3S_311a“ Access to Observations from Baseline and Reference Networks” launched by Copernicus in September 2016.

As is known, Copernicus is the European Union’s Earth observation programme, consisting of a complex set of systems which collect data from multiple sources: earth observation satellites and in situ sensors such as ground stations, airborne and sea-borne sensors. It processes these data and provides users with reliable and up-to-date information through a set of services related to environmental and security issues, such as land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency management and security. The service C3S_311a_Lot3falls within Climate Change Service (C3S).

The service has a duration of 48 months for a total budget of about 2.1 million Euro. IMAA is the Lead Contractor and responsible for the implementation of the whole Service which will be coordinated under the technical and scientific supervision of Dr. Fabio Madonna. IMAA will take advantage of eight sub-contractors involved and of their specific expertise delegating specific responsibilities in the projects. These are Universities, International bodies, Research institutes and SMEs located in Europe: University Maynooth (IE), Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BE), BK Scientific GmbH (D), National Physical Laboratory (UK),  Tallinn University of Technology (EW), University of Bergamo (IT), University of Bremen (D) and World Meteorological Organization (CH).

The first official kick-off meeting was held on  29th March 2017 involving all the sub-contractors and the ECMWF staff, who is  in charge to monitor the service implementation.

The annual meeting will take place in September 2017 at CNR Headquarter in Rome, in order to check the progress of the service activities and discuss the work plan.
