The ISTIMES "Integrated System for Transport Infrastructure surveillance  and Monitoring by Electromagnetic Sensing” ended in June 2012, after three years of activities.

The ISTIMES project has designed, assessed and developed a prototypical modular and scalable ICT-based system, exploiting distributed and local sensors, for non-destructive electromagnetic monitoring. The specific application field as the reliability and safety of critical transport infrastructures, even if the modularity of the ISTIMES approach has permitted to extend it successfully to other critical infrastructures, as dams. In addition, ISTIMES system is able to couple current monitoring of infrastructures with a high situational awareness during crisis management, providing updated and detailed real and near real time information about the infrastructure status to improve decision support for emergency and disasters stakeholders.

The project approved by the European Commission in the 7th Framework Programme was coordinated by the Italian TeRN Consortium "Tecnologie per le Osservazioni della Terra e i Rischi Naturali" and has involved eight partners from Sweden, Norway, France, Israel, Romania and Italy.

The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) has participated as Third Party of TeRN, with the involvement of the Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis (IMAA) and the Institute for electromagnetic sensing of the environment (IREA), which have strongly contributed to besides the coordination of the activities, also to the implementation of the ICT system architecture, the electromagnetic sensing system and the overall demonstration of the ISTIMES system on the real cases.
The final review meeting of the project will be held in Rome, at CNR headquarter, on 15 October 2012 with the presence of the scientific team, all Workpackage leaders, the project Officer and the external reviewer.
