On 18th and 19th November 2013 at the headquarters of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) in Rome there will be held the Management Committee (MC) Meeting and Working group Plenary sessions of the COST Action TU1104 - Smart Energy Regions.

The COST Action TU1104 “Smart Energy Regions” began in March 2012 and will take place over four years, involving numerous European researchers with different expertise and backgrounds. Currently there are over 70 participants involved in the Action from 26 different countries. The Italian participation is represented in the MC by Prof Rossano Albatici (University of Trento) and Dr Monica Salvia (National Research Council of Italy, Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis).

The aim of the Action is to investigate drivers and barriers that may impact on the large scale implementation of low carbon technologies in the built environment, essential to meet the targets for sustainable development set by EU and national governments. Research will cover topics such as policy and industrial support, development of skills and knowledge through training, local supply chains, and cost and value of these.

The regional level of governance has been shown to be a fundamental for the delivery of sustainability. The focus of the Action is set on the regional scale, which also enables factors such as availability of natural resource, rural-urban interactions, inter-city mobility, economies of scale and ecosystem preservation.
The findings of the Action will be published and offer valuable knowledge to policy-makers, stakeholders and professionals of the built environment.
